I really struggled with keeping my eyes from wandering. This part of the world is just full of unbelievably gorgeous women, and it’s not easy to walk the streets. I didn’t do too much in Latvia as I was only staying the one night in between Estonia and Lithuania. I was offered, by a very lovely Latvian girl, to go on the pub crawl but I had to decline as I knew what my future held if I agreed – I’d miss my 9am bus to Vilnius and I kind of have to make that to arrive in Norway.
I did however head out in the afternoon and explore the suburbs and I was lucky enough to see some truly lovely sights before calling it a night. I have to say Riga is lovely in the late afternoon. The city is truly alive with every main street bustling with restaurants and bars going flat chat. There are fire dancers and musicians and even a little boy challenging everyone to a 5 minute game of chess. I watched him for an hour, and he never went close to losing a game. His father was quite proud, but this kid was answering phones and having conversations mid game while defeating fully grown adults. Quite impressive.
The true events happened after I had fallen asleep. I have this mostly universal distaste towards most Aussie travellers. They just rub me the wrong way and the guys in my room were no exceptions.
At 4am drunk guy comes in looking for his mate Dave… Dave had passed out hours ago and had been snoring up a storm… dickbag decided to celebrate Dave being in bed by screaming about it – “Oi dave, OMG MATE, You’re ALIVE, IM SO HAPPY” on repeat around 12 times. There was a girl with this moron, seriously lady what the hell, who tried to silence him, but he kept going on… this time with his phone torch on full and in my eyes … he then shook Dave’s bed… Dave’s bed was the top bunk… above mine… I lost my shit. “If you don’t shut the fuck up and turn the light out you’re going to be the one that dies.” I said at the top of my longs. He very quickly shut up. She also very quickly left and didn’t return. It’s a wonderful case of Karma.
I then proceeded to get no more sleep that night. So I ventured out into the world of Riga at 5am … to learn that while Riga is a bustling city by night, it is a wasteland in the morning. Trash everywhere, and absolutely nothing except 1 or two shitty fast food restaurants are open. They have 400 cafes in old town (A wild guess) and not a single one of them is open when you most need coffee. I was furious. So angry that I got my bags and sat at the bus station two hours early, at least there were coffees and cheap food available for travellers here.
So, Riga, a wonderland by night, and if I return I’ll give myself a few days/nights to really hit the town and sample everything. Riga, by morning, a complete wasteland that I really didn’t enjoy. That’s my take… here are all the photos I managed to snap up before hitting the hay
