So I have found my favourite place not named Prague. I absolutely adored Finland. In fact I wrote a sad poem on the train leaving as I stared out the window and thought of ways to stay longer. It was the perfect combination of exciting, peaceful, cultural, modern, clean, and I had a great time catching up with two out of three of my wonderful Finnish friends (Sorry Akseli, next time mate).
I stayed at a pretty decent cheap hostel in Helsinki for my first night and for an 18 bedroom dorm it was pretty great. Right up until I dropped my water bottle from the top bunk onto my roommates head at 3am. Oops.
For the remainder of my time in Finland I stayed with Marika my Finnish friend that I hung out with and hosted in Australia. She was wonderful and really made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. She was definitely a deciding factor in my love for my time in Finland, thank you Marika!
On my first day with her we went hiking in the national park Nuuksio. It was so beautiful (photos below) and even though we got lost, and I managed to ruin my runners by stepping into the lake it was a pretty great adventure. The very definition of Mistakes and Adventures.
I then spent the next few days wandering around Helsinki and I have to say I love that city. It’s busy in the immediate centre, as you would expect, but maybe one block away it turns into this quiet suburban feel – while still maintaining a central location look.
I was able to find a few hours to catch up with Olga my long lost friend from Japan. In keeping with tradition we found Sushi to be the best choice for dinner. It was only a brief catch up, but nice nonetheless.
On my first day alone I explored and enjoyed Suomenlinna the UNESCO listed war fort. It was amazing to see, and I really took to the idea of chilling in the sun on some nice warm rocks as the wind and water played in front of me. It was made extra unique by the pale white Finns trying to tan all over the bluff. Very entertaining.
I really cannot wait to return.
I’ve been in Estonia for the last two days now and I am trying to play catch up with this blog while also finding time to survive/recover from alcohol and also see the beauty that it has to offer.
